05 Aug Golf glossary
Golf is more than just a sport. It’s a way of life — an experience of focus, nature, strategy, and elegance. Like any world with its own character, it also comes with its own language. For those just getting started, understanding the terminology of golf is just as important as learning how to swing a club or read a green.
At Vistabella Golf, we take pride in welcoming players from their very first steps. Our course has been carefully designed to inspire both those striving to improve and those discovering the magic of 18 holes for the first time. So if you’re new to the game, or simply want to brush up on the basics, this guide is for you: a complete, accessible and enjoyable introduction to the language of golf.
Why understanding golf lingo matters
Golf has a rich heritage, forged in Scotland, refined across the world’s great clubs, and passed down through generations. Its vocabulary condenses rules, shots, mindsets, and traditions in ways no other words can quite capture.
Knowing these terms won’t just help you understand the game better. It will boost your confidence, ease you into group play, and allow you to enjoy the full experience that golf has to offer — especially on a course as memorable as Vistabella.
The layout of a golf course
Before we talk shots or strategies, let’s get our bearings. A golf course is made up of different areas, each with its own role and challenges:
Hole
The basic unit of the course. Each hole has a defined length, a “par”, and its own hazards. At Vistabella Golf, you’ll find 18 holes carefully crafted by former world champion Manuel Piñero, with undulating fairways, strategic greens and a Mediterranean setting that invites you to stay long after the round is over.
Tee box
The starting area for each hole. There are usually different tee positions, adapted to each player’s level. Choosing the right tee can set the pace for the hole ahead.
Fairway
The “motorway” of golf. This is the closely mown strip between the tee and the green where you aim to land your ball after the drive.
Rough
The longer grass flanking the fairway. It’s more difficult to play from, so accuracy is key to avoiding it.
Green
The ultra-smooth, finely cut surface surrounding the hole. This is where you’ll use your putter and nerves of steel.
Bunker
A sand trap designed to test your technique and patience. At Vistabella, bunkers are placed with care — challenging, but never discouraging.
Water hazard
Lakes or streams that add drama and demand thoughtful course management. Our signature lake is both a visual highlight and a strategic feature of the course.
Key types of golf shots
A full round puts your entire skill set to the test. These are the essential shots every golfer should learn:
Drive
The opening shot from the tee, usually hit with a driver — the longest club in the bag. Power and direction are key.
Approach shot
A shot played towards the green, often using an iron or wedge. It requires control over distance and trajectory.
Chip
A short, low shot that rolls towards the hole. Ideal when you’re close to the green but not yet on it.
Pitch
A slightly longer shot than a chip, with more loft and less roll. Used to clear obstacles or rise over elevation.
Putt
The final shot, played on the green with a putter. Precision and touch matter more than power.
Shaped shots
- Fade: the ball curves gently from left to right (for a right-handed player).
- Draw: curves softly right to left.
- Hook and Slice: exaggerated versions of the above, usually unintentional.
Golf slang and informal terms
Golfers around the world share a rich, informal language. These expressions capture the spirit of the game:
Birdie
Completing a hole in one shot under par. Always worth a fist pump.
Bogey
One shot over par. Not ideal, but not disastrous either.
Eagle
Two under par. A rare and elegant feat.
Albatross
Three under par — an exceptional achievement.
Handicap
A number that reflects a player’s skill level. The higher the handicap, the more strokes allowed. It allows players of different levels to compete fairly — and at Vistabella, we welcome golfers of all abilities.
Mulligan
An unofficial “do-over” shot. Not recognised in formal play, but common among friends.
Fore!
A loud warning shout when your ball may endanger someone. Always yell it loudly and clearly.
Golf equipment: more than just clubs and balls
Clubs
From drivers to irons, wedges to putters — each club has a distinct purpose. Our pro shop team is happy to advise you on the right setup.
Ball
A small but mighty element. Balls vary by brand, feel, and flight — you’ll soon find the one that suits you best.
Tee
A small peg, wooden or plastic, that elevates the ball for your first shot on each hole.
Glove
Worn on the lead hand (usually left for right-handed players) to improve grip and prevent blisters.
Shoes
Golf shoes have specialised soles to give you grip during the swing. Comfort is crucial over 18 holes.
Buggy
A golf cart used to navigate the course. Particularly handy in summer or on longer rounds.
Essential etiquette and rules
Respect on the course
Golf is a game of honour. Keep pace, care for the course, remain quiet when others play, and dress smartly. At Vistabella, etiquette is part of the experience.
Order of play
Traditionally, the player furthest from the hole plays first. However, “ready golf” — where players go when safe and ready — is now widely accepted to keep play moving.
Penalties and hazards
Hitting into water, out-of-bounds, or losing a ball usually comes with a penalty. Knowing the course and playing smart helps avoid them.
Flagstick etiquette
Since 2019, players can choose to leave the flag in or remove it while putting. It’s a matter of personal preference — both are permitted.
Curious phrases and golf culture
Back nine / Front nine
The first nine holes are the “front nine”, the last nine are the “back nine”. Some players prefer one over the other for their flow or scenery.
Green fee
The price to play 18 holes. At Vistabella, we offer competitive rates, flexible tee times and tailored packages for groups.
Academy
Our golf academy is ideal for beginners. We offer individual and group lessons with expert instructors in a relaxed, professional environment.
Pitch & putt
A shorter course format that focuses on the short game — great for beginners and practice.
Driving range
A designated area for hitting practice shots. At Vistabella, you’ll find both covered bays and natural grass options, perfect for warming up before your round.
Where to learn and speak the language of golf
At Vistabella Golf, we don’t just play golf — we live it. Our 18-hole course is the perfect setting to learn, progress and fall in love with the game. With first-class facilities, a dedicated academy and a beautiful Mediterranean setting, it’s the ideal place to get started.
